The Press and Media are the number one enemy to politicians, Celebrities and the public. Their job is to get new stories and information that no one has heard of, and they will do what ever they have to to get it. They are trained to listen for someone to "slip" any info that is private and not meant to go public. Reporters have to follow some rules and guidelines to help keep them out of trouble.-
"Background"- not aloud to list a name but can describe you in detail. "Deep Background"- aloud to publish the information given but keep you anonymous "Off the Record"- not aloud to publish the information, but may use it to their knowledge
